Kevin Jones, Come on Down!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

The Cavs called up Kevin Jones from the Canton Charge today, finally. I’ve been interested to see what Jones can do, and now is as good a time as any to try out power forwards- Luke Walton is terrible, and Samardo Samuels shoots ill-advised mid-range jumpers like he’s Jordan Crawford. Here’s to hoping Kevin can make a difference on this team.

Backup PG, Anyone?

Donald Sloan, balling out.

The Cavs are still in need of a backup point guard. The spot still seems to be up for grabs between Jeremy Pargo and Donald Sloan, neither of whom particularly impressed in the preseason. Byron Scott raised the possibility of keeping both on the roster, but that seems unlikely to me- one would think that he’d rather have an extra big man (Samardo or Kevin Jones.) Regardless, here’s the link.

Casspi: Contributor?

Fourth-grade class photo, anyone?

Here’s some interesting stuff from the Plain Dealer, most notably a nice bit about Omri Casspi. He’s looked very good so far in preseason, certainly better than he looked all last year. It’d be great if he good play even as good as he did in his rookie season, when he was a real contributor to the Sacramento Kings. Cavs fans are stuck in a bit of a contradictory situation this year, as far as preseason performance goes. We’d like to believe that Casspi will be great, and Jon Leuer will hit a bunch of jumpers. But at the same time, we’re crossing our fingers that Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving are going to round into form quickly once they start playing for real. Also, another fantastic quote from Byron Scott, who has been avoiding giving any hints out about his starting rotation this year. When asked if Alonzo Gee would be starting this year, he responded, “I like when he comes off the bench.” He does a great job. He gives us energy. I like when he starts, too.” Here’s the link.

Azubuike and Some Leuer

Welcome to the gun show.

Jodie Valade wrote a nice piece for the Plain Dealer on Kelenna Azubuike and his NBA comeback. If he can stay aggressive, I see no reason why Azubuike shouldn’t be able to play decent backup minutes at the small forward position. Also: how do you pronounce his name? I can’t wait to hear Austin Carr mangle that one. Here’s the link.

Mary Schmitt Boyer, also of the Plain Dealer, put together a good read about Jon Leuer. The Bucks were very clogged at power forward last year, and Byron Scott’s a big fan of Leuer. Here’s the link.

Small Forwards and Health

That goatee is fantastic.

The Chronicle Online wrote a nice piece about the Cavs’ depth at the small forward position this year. I don’t really think that Omri Casspi counts as depth, exactly, but hey- to each man his own. And C.J. Miles just keeps coming through on the quotes. Here’s the link.

Also, a promising article from the Plain Dealer about the health of the team this year going into training camp. From Kyrie: “I’m 110 percent. No problems. I’ve been playing since the 15th of September. I’m just really excited to start training camp.” That’s nice to hear, isn’t it? Here’s the link.

On a side note, I think we can all agree that Kyrie NEEDS to maintain that goatee. It’s perfect. For all we know, this is the adjustment he needed to make “The Leap.”

10 Great Things About 11-12

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

The Plain Dealer released a pretty fun list of the top ten things to happen in the 2011-2012 season. Here’s the link. In my mind, #1 on the list for 2012-2013 has already happened: Omri Casspi, of ugly jumper and faux-hawk fame, attended my synagogue for Yom Kippur (the Jewish day of atonement) services last night. I was going to demonstrate correct shooting form, but wimped out and just shook his hand.
