? Another trade that makes no sense. One pick at the top of the second round for two picks that will be at the end of the 2nd round in another draft.
What, Howard will be gone by then, could have 2 more shots to draft a stiff from 32-40
If Howard leaves then they will be much better picks. That must be what Grant is banking on
what a joke of a draft. this kid could play the 3
grant must go
Just for fun…here were my pre-draft notes on Milan Macvan, the Cavs pick at 54:
Milan Macvan – 6’9”, 265 lbs. Turns 22 in November. Probably can’t defend NBA players. Played for Hemofarm in Serbian League against Vesely. Short, unathletic center. Probably better suited for European game. Poor rebounder, doesn’t block shots.
Hah. I remember that. I do not understand this draft at all. You come out of it with a point guard and a power forward? The ONLY way this draft makes sense is if they’re trading for Rudy Gay.
Outside of Irving, which was a no brainer, this was the only pick I liked all night and we traded him.
Macvan will never play in the NBA.
Thompson can be a good bench guy who can play defense but that is it. I don’t think he’ll ever be a starter because he can’t shoot.
This was supposed to be our night with picks and 1 and 4 and a trade exception. Tonight the Cavs failed miserably.
what a terrible night
grant got smokescreened hard
worse night then the decision
having the 1st and 4th and failing this hard is comprable to the river catching fire
fire grant!
I’m putting Thompson, Grant, and Gilbert on an extremely short leash. This mess needs to be cleaned up quickly or there will be hell to pay.
I think that Chris Grant was possessed by the ghost of Ted Stepien tonight. Holy hell, could they have doe a worse job other than Kyrie Irving?
To recap: One PG with injury concerns, one undersized version of DeSegana Diop with hops, two future second round picks, and a bad European 4/5. Grant most likely lost his job, or sowed the seeds of his demise, tonight.
Cmon everybody. Look at the bright side.
Recap: Future star PG, we dont have to watch Samardo Samuels or Luke Harangody anymore, turned 1 2nd round pick into 2 future 2nd round picks, and I really can’t think of anything positive about this euro goof but ill get back to you on that..
Agreed, Cooley. Interested in what people thought of other team’s draft. Thought Rich Cho crushed it for the Bobcats. Thought the Nets did a great job getting Marshon Brooks at 25. Like the 2 guys the Jazz got, even though I’m not sold on Kanter. Thought Minnesota had another draft that made no sense, aside from getting the best player. The Spurs made a nice move to make Kawhi Leonard who they will groom into a very good player. Hated seeing the Heat get Norris Cole. Like Vucevic at 16 (another player who makes a million times more sense than Tristan Thompson). Like Fareed to the Nuggets, but don’t know who’s gonna score for them. Liked Justin Harper for the Magic. Don’t understand all the small forwards on the Wizards now. Thought the Bucks changed their team for the better. Thought the overwhelming theme of the draft was “stash guys overseas cause we’re not playing this year.” Chris Grant missed the memo.
Chris Grant messed up big time. Could have changed the franchise by drafting Williams first and seeing how it played out knowing that Brandon Night or Kyrie Irving would still be there at the number 4 spot. You never know maybe Irving slides because both teams had point guards already? You will never know because Chris Grant messed up big. The second rounders are purely a pipe dream, we got no players besides Irving that will make a direct impact, couldn’t capitalize on trade exception. Failure as a GM and I’m sure Dan Gilbert isn’t happy
Can we get over the Derrick Williams and Kyrie Irving at 1/4 delusion? There is no doubt the Jazz would have taken Irving at 3. And Brandon Knight is more likely than Tristan Thompson to spend his career coming off the bench. He showed nothing in his freshman year to indicate he had NBA starting point guard ability. Drafting him was gambling on him becoming a different player than he has been. Not impossible considering his age, but a risk I’m glad the Cavs did not incur. At least we got the one obvious thing right here and took Irving.
And I see that HoopsDogg actually believes what I sarcastically suggested in the last thread — that the Cavs would be better off with Nikola Vucevic than Tristan Thompson. Is height a sufficient statistic for your drafting strategy? Can I interest you in Gheorghe Mureşan?
had tristan thompson been the desired pick ( non trade) the cavs woul dbe speaking alot more
they were screwed and in doing so they ruined a franchise
I completely believe the Cavs would be better off with Vucevik: better shooter, better defensive rebounder, bigger body. Not that he’s any kind of end all be all. It’s more of an analysis that Tristan Thompson is massively overrated. The only thing he has going for him is that Texas products tend to produce better in the pros (see Boobie Gibson and Kevin Durant) because Rick Barnes is a 100x better recruiter than he is a coach.
I’d wager money on him being a 15 minute per game player at best.
I’d certainly take that bet. I would also gladly bet on Thompson’s eventual superiority to Vucevic and Faried. Biyombo’s kind of a wild card. Guess I’d take the bet since it’s better than 50/50 odds, but Biyombo could be frighteningly good.
Massive overreaction on all parts. Drafts take years to unpack, not 11 hours. Also, you want to fire the GM who got us the top pick and the veteran to train him by trading away two role players? Wow.
The cabs demonstrated something tonight. 1. they knew this draft sucked, got theirs, and took a gamble by…
2. Showing they are dedicated to a full rebuild of this team. JJ and Andy are not solid building blocks. Period. Thompson has great potential to become solid for this team, but in a weak draft it is all a gamble. Next year is where we want to draft for fit. Watch the TPE and us staging picks.
And good lord stop trying to fire chris grant!
Enis with first pick because you would have choice of Brandon or Kemba with 4.
Had hopes of Daugherty and Price…I am sure Cavs no what they are doing…not
Anyone else read the tidbit where tristan thompson stopped derrick williams consistently at the cavaliers workout? That had me sold enough to wait and see and not jump ship immediately…
I know I said massive over reaction already, but honestly, I just re-read some of these posts and they are really funny. Saying things like the franchise is sunk and this was worse than the decision is awesome. It makes me feel better about out current situation, knowing that it’s not as bad as some are painting it to be.
