The more videos I watch of this kid, the more I like him as a 4th pick. He is aggresive, knows how to rebound and can shoot from the outside. Patiently waiting for draft day…
Just about every move Chris Grant has made has turned out well. I’m confident that he will make a good choice at #4.
If the Cavs come away with a franchise point guard and center from this draft, I for one would be thrilled. I just hope that Irving is more Chris Paul than Raymond Felton, and that Enes Kanter is more Kevin Love than Brad Miller (assuming these are the two picks taken).
This is my problem with Kanter. The best case scenario is he’s the Turkish Kevin Love, does that guy win championships? No. We are falling in love with Irving and Kanter because we know so little about them that we can project onto them. Take Derrick Williams first, and then take the best guard left 4th (I don’t see much difference between Irving, Walker, and Knight). Try to get a pick in the teens to take Marshon Brooks, Burk, or some other shooting guard.
I think that the cavs will end up with irving, kanter, and marcus morris. I’m not too high on morris, but the cavaliers are since they have already worked him out twice. I think that we will get a starter caliber wing with the tpe. That would be a very interesting lineup next year:
pg: irving, davis
sg: (TPE), gibson
sf: morris, eyenga
pf: hickson, verajeo
c: kanter, hollins
I like that team going into next year. Thoughts?
@Iz remember two things.
1. We don’t necessarily want to use the TPE on a current starter. The rebuild of this team will take a few years, which brings me to…
2. Our best shot at a quality wing is next year’s draft. As emphasized multiple times on this blog, Harrison Barnes not declaring this year was the single greatest blow to the cavs future.
So. I think we get Irving, but I don’t know if Kanter will be there. I would be fine with the TPE being used for a young starter or another first round pick, depending on what it is.
Final thought, PF will be our most interesting situation the year. Does anyone out there think Andy will still get minutes at center?
Of course Andy will get minutes at center. On a good team you have a 3 man center/pf rotation, and a backup that can play both positions: Andy.
Curious what people think of Marshon Brooks. He’s skyrocketing up the draft board, and may have replaced Burks as the top 2 guard in the draft, and might be the highest senior taken. He has an intriguing mix of length, handle, wiggle, and scoring instincts.
@Iz Are you saying that the Cavs would pick Morris in the 2nd round? I think he’ll be gone by then
HoopsDogg,
I prefer Burks. He’s 2.5 years younger and already slightly more productive. I think Brooks will be a good scorer on average teams.
@J no but they look like they would like to buy and/or trade for mid-late lottery first round picks that teams do not want because they would have to guarantee a contract
The one thing I see about Brooks is some jaw dropping defensive abilities with that wingspan. Tim Grover talks about how he reminds him of Kobe, and that’s where I see it most, the defense. There’s talk of the Bucks taking him over Burks.
Also, the Bucks appear to be shopping Brandon Jennings. Takers?
Is there someone that’s really impressed by Brooks’ defense? Last week, espn had an article by David Thorpe indicating that Brook’s can be a good defender but he didn’t show it in college. draftexpress discusses how providence mainly played a trapping zone, so nba defense will be an adjustment for Brooks. They do note his defensive potential due to his athleticism. His 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks are good, but he plays 37 minutes a game and providence plays at a very fast pace.
A few other fun stats that may not mean much: Brooks is only three months younger than the NBA’s MVP. Also Providence was outscored by 15 points when Brooks was on the court this season, and outscored their opponents by 30 points when he was off the court (as per statsheet.com)
If Brooks can be a lockdown defender, that’s a huge plus…but I think that’s more of a hope than an expectation.
I Think the Cavs should take Williams first. freakish hops and good midrange, and inside polished game already, then get either Kantner. or available point guard with the 4th pick. Then use our trade exception for a top tier starter, then the Cavs can become rellevant once again.. Any thoughts??
Re: Hoopsdog
Kevin Love doesn’t win championships because of who he is playing with. Chris Paul doesn’t win championships because of who he has been playing with. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, that other turd don’t win championships when they were separate because of who they were playing with. They win once they are together.
Put Kevin Love on Dallas or Miami this year and he has a good chance of winning a championship and your argument goes out the window.
Look, I have no idea how good Kanter will or won’t be in the NBA. I’m just saying comparing him to Kevin Love and dismissing him because Love has not won championships is ridiculous. In the NBA its all about who plays alongside you. Would you rather have the Turkish Kevin Love or the Turkish Robert Horry to build your team around for the next 5-7 years. The one guy has won nothing and the other won 7 times due to being in lucky situations and choosing his teams wisely.
As for Brooks, check out the highlight package on nbadraft.net. He certainly has the ability, if not the willingness. But I take your point.
