Live Thread: Rockets at Cavs

The Cleveland Cavaliers are fresh off a big win against the Philadelphia 76ers for only their third victory of the season. The Cavs will now go up against another tough match-up in the Houston Rockets and will be doing so on the second night of a back to back. The last time Cleveland played on the second night of a back to back, things got, well, let’s just say ugly. The Cavaliers were pummeled by a less than enthusiastic Wizards team and will be looking to avoid a similar fate against the Rockets.

Houston has had a bit of a rough season themselves with James Harden missing the first portion of the year. However, before losing to the Pistons just last night, they were on a small hot streak with five straight wins. Hopefully their tired legs will be more evident than Cleveland’s own. They will need all the help they can get going against one of the tough Western Conference teams. It would be nice to log two wins in a row but they will have to avoid sloppy turnovers to have a chance at all in this one. That hasn’t been an easy task for Cleveland this season and gets worse when tired. Here’s to hoping for another exciting game. As always, Go Cavs!

9. Hill. Rotation/Rotation.
Has the skills to be a B/B+ player, but cannot take the heavy minutes anymore. But 12.6/1.9/3.0 on 55.6% FG, 48% 3PT, and 87.5% FT is still a contributing player, even if not the defender he once was. If a PO team comes calling with a good deal, make the trade. If not, let him be the backup/mentor & reluctantly part ways in the summer. Or we could keep & eat the last contract year.

10. Korver. Niche/niche.
Does not have the wheels to play 20-25 mins a night anymore. But shooting, gravity, and smarts make him valuable for short spurts with a contender. And he can swing games in those spurts. Keep him in low minute rotation until a trade materializes.

We have 6 guys I really like a lot for this team going forward (Love, Sexton, Cedi, TT, Nance, & Nwaba). Then it gets trickier.

7. Hood. Rotation/B/B+.
Size & that stroke are tantalizing. But if he is not scoring, what does he give you? The mentality & tendency to fade make me think he never reaches that potential. When he is bad he really hurts you. But he HAS shown more consistency (48% 3PT) and a bit better all-around game. Keep for now. Start for now. Tough decision looming.

8. Clarkson. Rotation/B/B+.
Like Hood, he does not give you much when not scoring. Like Hood, he can be really bad at times. Like Hood, he struggles on D. And like Hood, he has actually been pretty darn good at times, perhaps even MOST of the time. Utility of a get buckets/bad D types fade on better teams. Unless D/playmaking improve, probably move on after contract expires. But IF they do improve, lookout.

Let me revise my previous regarding the levels of a roster. 1st two OK (studs & B/B+). Top two are your heavy minutes guys. Would break rotational/niche into two categories. Rotational are the 16-24 min guys, niche more like 10-12. Then you have the developmental/past it tier.

5. Nance. Rotational/B/B+.
Nance is a too small C or PF who cannot shoot. He also has excellent BBIQ, can pass well, and is a good (not great) defender. If the shot comes along, he goes to B/B+. $11 mil seems an overpay, but not by a ton. Keeper.

6. Nwaba. Rotational/stud.
Nwaba is a more impactful defender than Nance and can guard more positions. Even if he cannot shoot a lick, he is a rotation guy on D alone. Also, he is aggresive around the rim. Stud if he could shoot well & guys had to close on him, but I do not think it gets there. B/B+ if it was OK (Bruce Bowen). Keeper.

Fun week. I see hope. For me, a contending team breaks down like this:

1. 2-3 Studs (all-star or better)
2. 3-5 B/B+ guys. Heavy minutes. Help in a variety of ways.
3. 3-5 rotational/limited guys. Big minutes might hurt you. But OK in limited minutes or even more minutes if matchup/lineup hides their flaws.

For us. Player. Current level/Ceiling.
1. Love. Low end stud/same.
Love as your #2 can get you to the Finals, but #1 has to be otherwordly (LeBron). Great as a #3. Keeper/starter for us.

2. Sexton. Rotational/stud.
Thought B/B+ was his ceiling, but am revising upward. Still a long way to go with defense & playmaking, but he is rotational good now & trending upward quickly. Love the want to. Keeper/starter.

3. Cedi. Rotational/B/B+.
Cannot be a stud unless the shooting improves. But I think his all-around game gets him to B/B+ with work & more consistency. Keeper. Starter unless we get a stud wing.

4. TT. B/B+/B/B+.
If he can finish well enough to punish smalls, TT is a B/B+ player with his boardwork & defense & leadership. If not, he is a rotation\niche guy who kills an offense too often. Keeper/starter for this team.

Here we go, wins (pick prot & team)
3 – ATL
4 – PHX, Cavs (1-10, ATL)
5 – CHI
6 – NY
7 – WASH, MIA
8 – BRK, Utah
9 – MIN, SA, HOU, DAL (1-5, ATL)
10 – NO
—————–
Non-lotto pick swaps:
DEN: (1-12, BRK)
MIL: (1-3, 17-30, PHX)
TOR: (1-20, SA)

Boston could have 4 picks: theirs + better of Sac/Phil (1 prot), Memphis (1-8), Clips (1-14).

I could see us catching the Knicks and injury riddled Bulls pretty soon. Gonna be harder to catch that next tier (Mia, Brk, Wash).

If Love comes back strong & we hold onto Hill/Korver for a while, perhaps. Especially if the Wiz blow it up.

Just watching the replay – that stretch of 5 minutes of play late in the 3rd where CLE stretch their leads into the teens is just so enjoyable. SCENE: Rockets, now realising how fast Sexton is, send 3 guys to close out on Sexton as he fast breaks. He approaches the hoop with Harden on him, so he backs off. Looks around. Harden backs off. So Young Bull calmly slots the mid-range two.

At this point, the Rockets commentators (I am forced to watch the away feed) stop talking about how the Cavs love of the long 2 will kill them against the Rockets since they can’t compete from beyond the arc.

Sexton simply has scored better (volume and efficiency considered) than Young, Knox, Shai, and arguably Mikal given Mikal’s limited role. Knox has been bad. Young has been awful. Sexton has been awful, but simply is a far more efficient scorer than Young or knox at this point. The others have been better but in far more limited roles.

Yeah. I think Sexton is a top 5 rookie so far:

1. Doncic
2. Ayton
——–
3. Jackson (starter on winner)
4. SGA (starter on winner)
5. Sexton

If we keep winning some games & he is productive, and/or the Grizz/Clips stumble or the rooks stop starting, #3 is on the horizon.

Could care less if Sexton takes a million mid range shots if he averages 15+ ppg on 50+% from the field during the games he starts as a rookie.

Boston going down. Dubs nip Kings by one at home. Got 2 o-boards to take a 1 point lead with 6 sec left & survive a miss & a tip to win by 1.

Cavs 4 back of Celts in the loss column. Let’s go beat the T’Wolves.

One Sexton play I really liked was just an awareness play. Might have been the play where LNJ tweaked the ankle. Took us a while to advance the ball getting everyone untangled.

Sexton realized we were headed for an 8 second and hustled across the line with two quick steps. Not sure Kyrie makes that play.

Great slate of games upcoming this week – Timberwolves, Thunder, Celtics, and Raptors. I’m predicting 1-3 but the record doesn’t really matter if they continue to compete like they have the last 3 games.

Sexton: 29/4/2 on 14-21 FGs. +7.
Clarkson: 20/5/4 on 8/16.
TT: 16/20/2 with 4 steals. +8.
Korver: 12 pts 3/3 from deep. 5 rebs.
Nwaba: 12/4. +11. Harden 3/15 vs him.
LNJ: 8/8.
Hood: 9 pts. 2/4 deep. Dagger 3. +15.
Cedi: +14.

Even the guys who did not shoot well (Nwaba, Cedi) or score much (Hood, LNJ) found ways to contribute. That is winning hoops.

Forget the draft. If we are bad enough to need it, we’ll get it. If we are good enough to lose it, then that means we are actually a good team in Year One without LeBron.

If we are that good then not only will this year be a lot of fun, but also Sexton, Cedi, Nwaba, Nance, Hood, and JC can all keep improving. Not to mention how funny and shocking would it be to see TT in his first All Star game?

Jason

Agreed. With Love and Dekker out, they don’t have enough frontcourt depth if they got rid of TT. I also think TT is providing some intangibles in the locker room and his “never back down” spirit is rubbing off on Cedi, Sexton, Clarkson, Hood, etc.

Hill is way better than Harrison. Way better.

Keep so he can teach some. Then look for a trade. Hill is 48% from deep and 56%? on FGs. Play him less minutes, vs reserves, and trade value will go up. Sexton has to start.
