Podcast Episode 179: Dog Days, Random Encounters, & Lawn Chair Quarterbacks

Well… it’s been a long, eventful summer. Amazingly, the NBA season is just around the corner with just a few weeks to go until training camps start up again. To celebrate the dog days of August before we delve back into the thick of all things Cavalier, Tom, Nate and EG settled into their old aluminum and frayed nylon lawn chairs to shoot the breeze for an hour or two. We talk LeBron and the Lakers, touch on some of the new faces coming to Cleveland, take some detours to the Browns, Tribe and even the unfortunate Urban Meyer saga… plus we share a little of our own travails this summer… including the time Tom and Nate had a random encounter at the same gritty Michigan small town chocolate factory.

Yeah, it’s long in the tooth… so what else is new? Be sure to stick around for Tom’s awesome softball tales to get some real context for the lawn chairs in question…

As always you can catch us above, on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts or Google Play.

And as always… GO CAVS!

Bummer for us. Lising Bron & Allie to LA. Wish her the best.

This is disappointing news. She was an excellent sideline reporter for the Cavs and her relationship with the players was clearly genuine and really enhanced her ability to give Cavs fans a good look into who these players are as people rather than just players on a court. I hope this doesn’t signal the end of Road Trippin’

I’m not creepily infatuated with her as some Cavs fans seems to be, but this is a bummer. She comes across as very likable. Happy for her if it’s best for her career, but I hate that it’s LA, and I’ll miss her.

I’m in the middle of my Sling TV free 7 day trial. Does anyone know if it has Fox Sports Ohio during basketball season? It has Sportstime Ohio now for Tribe games, but I don’t see FSO.

Playstation Vue seems to be a lot better in terms of # of stations vs. Sling. I’ve used both, and was impressed by all the channels PS Vue had.

Just got to listen to the podcast – got a heck of a laugh about the chocolate shop and summer softball stories. The three of you work well together and make for some great podcasts.

Tom, I used to live in Kettering a year ago (now moved down to Cincinnati). Loved it when I was up there – glad to hear the softball scene is alive and thriving!

Who is Colin McGowan? He kind of hates Kevin Love? Sounds more like he hates himself. I think he should probably seek professional help. He can’t write, he has nothing to say and no facts to back whatever point he’s vaguely trying to make. Pathetic. I’m praying Kevin lights it up this year and the Cavs are competitive. So tired of the Cleveland bashing.

Colin took over editorial duties in 2011 when John Krolik left to pursue a job in an NBA front office.

I think Colin is one of the best writers I’ve ever come across, and I rarely ever agree with him on anything.

Clearly hehas been dealing with some health issues, both mental and physical, resents the praise lavished on nba players for speaking out about what millions of other Americans speak out on everyday, and apparently has never loved love to begin with. It is very unfocused, but the point seems to be a sort of a cathartic release for someone struggling in their own life with their own health.

He used to write for cavstheblog way back in the day. Looks like he has been struggling with some stuff recently and needed to vent.

I think I remember Colin…

After reading this piece I will never waste another second of my life knowingly reading anything else by him.

It’s clear he’s dealing with major depression but that article was bush league at best. Go take care of yourself and don’t worry about the Cavs.

agreed watching the browns “might ” be fun again ——would be a HUGE SUCCESS story if josh can come back and perform even close to what he once was —–I might even stretch it to 5-11——-getting that time of year when we root for all the teams —GO TRIBE / BROWNS / BUCKEYES / CAVS !!

Fun Pod, guys, finally got a chance to finish it today.

I’ve been really enjoying Hard Knocks — it’s making me want to root for the Browns more than I usually do. Myles Garrett seems like a really intelligent, likable guy. Landry is a bit of a kook, but a terrific player. Baker Mayfield is winning me over.

Browns are so much better at the skill positions, especially if Gordon can go, than they have been in years. Still not convinced they can win a lot of games, but there should be some good moments this year. My prediction is 4-12 at this point, but 8-8 is possible.

No chance. I live in Columbus. I thought 2 games max, but they probably figured he had to sit for one meaningful game at least.

Warning sent, he effs up again and he is gone.

One of the refreshing things about the NBA is that it is a situation where I do not despise the league but love the spirt.

Soccer is my favorite but I DESPISE MLS. I like football but hate the NFL. I don’t hate the NCAA but certainly think they exploit their players/fans and I do not like big time programs at all. Rape away at PSU, MSU, FSU, & OSU.

Nice to hear you guys. I went up to Holland, Michigan myself for a few days. Perfect weather. I am for sure most looking forward to Cedi and Sexton this season. Cedi can be a star if he really improves his shot, just going to be a good rotation player if he doesn’t, IMO. Sexton, who knows…I am pretty sure he will show flashes and struggle in equal measure this season. I am positive he won’t be a dog, like Bennett. I remember David Thorpe a couple of months ago on a pod saying a lot of people don’t really understand how young players improve, thinking they work on everything. He said what coaches do with young players from the start of training camp is pick one thing to work on, and try to improve that one thing. With Cedi, it should be shooting threes – that is where he will most increase his value. Sexton, I don’t know…I would personally say also shooting threes, but maybe there is something else more important for him. Maybe really working on distance shooting waits for next year for him. The way he likes to get into the paint, maybe working on ways… Read more »

Getting his shot up isn’t the issue. It’s converting, which means learning angles, finishing with both hands, and getting all the way to the cup. Also learning when to kick when it’s not there.

Not sure if C:tB’s polling tech can be activated during the off-season, but I’d be curious to see how the community would vote on the following:

How good will Cedi Osman be in 2021-22, his age 27 season?

* With IT in China
* G-league standout
* Alonzo Gee-league standout
* Third guy off bench
* Capable 6th man
* Solid starter on a bad team
* Great role player in most systems
* 3rd-best player on a playoff team
* All-star
* Best player eliminated in the 2nd round
* Puts team on his back in the playoffs
* Multiple Finals MVP awards
* Top 10 all-time

Cedi isn’t there because he’s a nice kid, if he’s working out with this kind of elite talent they see something elite in him. Looking at his summer league and FIBA performances I think Cedi is going to breakout this year. It might have been Nate that commented in the podcast regarding Cedi incorporating some of LBJ’s moves in summer league. The kid is athletic with a crazy motor and a basketball IQ to match. GO CEDI !

So I don’t know if anyone here is part of the NBA Fan Forum, but it’s this thing where the NBA sends fans surveys to take based on a variety of topics. Their latest ones are about changing the playoff format and it seems the league is strongly suggesting a route that the bracket would re-seed when reaching the conference championships, regardless of conference.

So if it was like that this year, it would have been Cavs vs. Rockets and Warriors vs. Celtics. Too gimmicky I think; don’t really like the idea, but wanted to share that.

Nate Smith
Admin
29 days 15 hours ago

I just don’t see any owner in the East wanting to go for this.

Charlie E
Guest
Charlie E
29 days 15 hours ago

I think the league wants to see the Lakers vs. Celtics and that can’t happen as long as Golden State is ruling the west. With a re-seed there is a decent chance the Lakers/Celtics are the 2-3 seeds, with Warriors & Philly as the 1-4.
