Live Thread: Cavs Media Day

With the air in most parts of the country starting to carry the tiniest chill, basketball fans know it’s now time for the NBA season to begin anew and the 2015-16 champion Cleveland Cavaliers take the court in defense of their city’s first major title in 52 years.
Of course, no one — not seasoned veteran, precocious rookie, or even your favorite CtB writer — can just rush out onto the court and start playing in games that count. Players, coaches, writers and fans all need to start out slow. We need our reps in training camp. We need our preseason exhibition games. And, of course, we need the event that sets the next nine months of NBA action rolling — however slowly — toward the 2017 Finals: Media Day.
Basketball is very nearly back, Cavs fans, and today we get to hear from the people who play it, coach it, General Manage it, and broadcast it.
Beginning at 12:30 pm EST, you can view all the Media Day events streaming on cavs.com. So, watch all that Fred, Austin, and the gang have in store, then come back to CtB to discuss.

Chalmers if healthy, then Cole, never Heinrich. But I think they will wait it out and see how the roster does before signing any of those guys.

That’s true, but JR has put the knucklehead act out to pasture since he has become a Cav.
I think one reason for his old act is that he was always on the same team as Carmelo Anthony. The team has to stand around and watch CA chuck away with no chance of winning anything, so you might as well clown around.
I know and he was surprisingly in control last two years. Just responding to the guy who liked to attack me to make him see that these players are not saints, may be our heroes on basketball court but they all have their faults too. I can show fault in every player but I can also show +ves in each player. I like to focus on what makes me happy, i.e. a competitive basketball game in which warriors win championship but also respect the worthy opponent. You may have a point, but uh, as far as nut hunters – Draymond is kind of in a class by himself.
They better resign JR, especially after holding out so long with the coaches, and not resigning Delly and buying out Mo. Would be a travesty not to bring this group back for at least one more year. I get it. Maybe DG isn’t making a ton of money or even losing money, but sports teams probably aren’t very safe investments to begin with so billionaires expecting heavy monetary returns year in year out are probably fooling themselves. Hopefully, Gilbert doesn’t cheap out just yet.
Why are you worried about this? Last year the same thing happened with Thompson and he was back before opening night. Same will happen with JR. Gilbert has been a great owner.
Because Thompson was restricted. JR isn’t. Big difference. Also incredibly frustrating that we are holding out on bringing a championship core back together. The coaching holdout really seemed ridiculous as well.
It’s just normal routine business. JR will re-sign, just like TT re-signed, just like the coaches are all signed. It’s all just made up drama by CtBloggers.
The coach thing came from Chris Haynes reporting that negotiations were bordering on hostile this summer. So it wasn’t made up by anyone on this blog.
And what was the fallout? Oh yeah, nothing at all. Same with all the made up drama around the Cavs. Just do what I do and don’t pay attention to it because at the end of the day the Cavs are in the Finals once again.
I suppose if there was a season to take a cols chill pill, this would be it. Still until JR resigns I will be a bit on edge. Think Cleveland fandom has conditioned me.

I am basically glad Mo retired. I doubt if he can play anymore, and we have several rookies that can use that roster spot.
I know it’s about cap. However, if it is so obvious that JR is resigning for a certain amount of money, why is everyone holding out? In the end Thompson got the contract everyone always thought he would get based off the D Green contract. In other words, more than the cavs would have liked to pay him. As for Mo, yeah, he wasn’t very good anymore. Offensively, he could still get us a few points if he could hit threes, but his defensive issues outweighed those. Dellavedova wasn’t signed because it was obvious at the end of last year they didn’t need him and could get by with Shump + McRae if need be. JR will be signed because it was obvious at the end of last year that they really need him and he’s really great.
So he will be back. Do not question Griffin, everything he does turns to gold so far.
Griffin has been great. No doubt. I think if Griffin had more financial leeway this offseason, JR likely would have been signed by now. DG may finally be feeling the tax pain. McRae is ok. He is pretty bad defensively, or was in summer league. He also loves contested mid range 2s. Felder was a far superior player in summer league in my opinion.

My guess on the whole Mo “will he/won’t he” retire thing is that he was looking for some sort of buyout. Cavs probably didn’t want to give him as much as he wanted, so he said he was coming back to play. They probably reached an agreement, or Mo lost at chicken.

I’m sad about Mo. He really carried them at the beginning of last season until his knees wore out. I’m just glad he got to play in the best game 7 of all time.

Wow! Griff drops two pieces of news… Cavs have made an aggressive offer to try and get JR signed and Mo’s agent reached out and says Mo has changed his mind and is retiring…
The news about JR was a little unclear to me. Do you interpret that as a NEW offer?
I do. It sounded like they’ve maybe made their last/best offer though since he hedged with the “next man up” line…
Ya, it did seem that way. Kind of makes me a bit nervous, ha. Hopefully that offer is what JR is looking for and we get an update sometime soon.
