A Farewell To Dahntay

A Farewell To Dahntay

2016-08-01 Off By EvilGenius

On Saturday, the Cavs waived the seldom but effectively used Dahntay Jones about four months into his Cleveland career. The business reason for doing this was because his $1.6 million salary would have become guaranteed today for the entire 2016-17 season.

Jones, signed on the final day of the regular season, scored 13 points in his Cavs debut against the Pistons. Thought to be just veteran filler/insurance for the playoff run, he actually provided a pivotal spark in Game 6 of The Finals, scoring five straight points to help stop a Golden State rally, and also drew a couple of fouls on Draymond Green.

In his only other real playoff action, Dahntay got himself suspended for a game in the Eastern Conference Finals after punching Bismack Biyombo in his nether region in Game 3. Even though he was fined $80K for the blow, that was apparently “taken care of” by LeBron.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, a DJ return is still possible if he clears waivers.

Given his relatively short stay with the Cavs… here are five things you might not have known about the well-traveled veteran swingman…

1) He’s played for eight NBA teams (Grizzlies, Kings, Nuggets, Pacers, Mavericks, Hawks, Clippers, Cavs), but never officially for the team that drafted him (Celtics) with the 20th overall pick in the 2003 draft.

2) He had not one, but two stints with Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBDL who have arguably one of the best/craziest mascots around…

3) He is the cousin of former NBA big man Al Harrington.

4) He is married to Valeisha Butterfield, the daughter of North Carolina Congressman G. K. Butterfield.

5) He recently lost a bunch of his prized rare Nike kicks in a storage unit snafu

We’ll see if DJ comes back to the Cavs to help fill out the bench in the coming months, but if this is truly goodbye, here’s one of my favorite external recaps of Dahntay’s adventures in The Finals…
