Wow. According to the AP, Varejao has a torn ankle tendon and may be done for the year. Obviously, this is completely devastating. Not only was Andy the team’s best player and the only guy playing any defense, but he was the only truly attractive trade asset the Cavs had. Keeping Andy isn’t the worst thing in the world by any stretch of the imagination, but trading him for the right package could have really helped the team rebuild in earnest.
Well, not much more to say here. The worst team in basketball just lost its best player. Lord only knows how much lower the Cavs will sink now. Never say things can’t get worse, right?
things certainly can’t get any worse..
While it totally sucks that our best player will be out, I am THRILLED that this will prevent him from being traded. I just wouldn’t be able to stand my favorite player getting traded after everything else that has happened. He has an incredibly reasonable contract. There is no real reason to get rid of him. We already have picks and Jamison has played his way into confusing a contender into trading for him (I hope). Andy is worth more than a couple picks.
The worst part isn’t him being out, its that it prevents him from being traded. I was looking forward to getting some new blood on this tea (as well as a pick, or two?). Not to mention he was the team’s most valuable asset, and the fact that he’s injured (again) isn’t helping his trade value.
“Varejao, averaging a team-best 9.7 rebounds and 9.1 points, is also the team’s best interior defender and provides constant energy with his hustle.”
the team’s best interior defender? How about the team’s only defender?
Oh man, this is really hurts. Following a team that gives you very little reason to watch just got harder because my favorite player to watch is probably out for the year. Oh well, at this point I just hope they keep losing heartily and get a couple more draft picks so there’s a little more hope next year.
Agree with Colin, it hurts the team in terms of the trade season. Could have really gotten some nice stuff out of him.
However, on the court it means we lose by 25 instead of 18. But, I mean, can it really make a difference in the W-L when the team is already this bad? It’s like I say about nuclear weapons, what difference does it make between having 6,000 and 3,000 if it only takes 1,000 to destroy the entire planet.
I think “things couldnt get any worse” idea came and went a long time ago. We werent winning with Andy. And i dont mean he wasnt important to the team. he absolutely was an is. And has been arguably been having the best year of his Cavs career. As a fan Loosing by 34 to Minnesota, was a low point. After that any losses by less than that was almost a victory. That said, the point am trying to make, it beamse evident a while back that playing for this season was not in the cards. As such we could only try and enjoy the little victories moral or not. I think with that i can safely say, the only thing that would make this team’s situation worse would be an injury bug to the entire roster. We have lost to the previously worst team twice, the players crumbled on Dec 2nd arguably the most important game to the average cav’s fan, they havent won on the road in 2 months,4 of their 5 starters are injured(Mo playing through it),And their defense is the worst thing we’ve seen in a really long time. Am pretty sure this covers just how bad this team has come. And now losing Andy? If the players, the fans, coaches an front office can keep it together for the next 3 months, am pretty sure we’ll all be ok. The rookies can grow,JJ can stop whinning,And we can unload a player or two for a draft pick or two.
The Cavs have managed to loose games without actually loosing any player to a trade. As i watch them every night i cant help but think that with one talented semi star,a defensive assistant coach, and a few other pieces, this team would be ok. They have been able to hold their own when they statistically have no business being in any game. And when they manage to play 2 minutes of defense, they are pretty decent.
Point is,i feel that the worst of this season is over.If they can hold on to not loose by 50 to the Lakers on Teusday,Be semi competitive on this road trip, come back home in one piece having completed their longest road trip of the season, and somehow muster 2 wins to avoind being or tying the worst record in the history of the NBA, we should be fine.
I guess after all thats happened this season, you learn to appreciate the little things and keep have a positive spin. Thats what sanity is all about.
Also,in terms of trade, Andy is arguably the Cavs most important player. He would have been a great trading chip. However am not sure alot of teams believe he’s valuable enough to trade away a valuable asset they have. First round pick or a really good player or both because quite honestly, the Cavs dont need players with”expiring contracts” who cant really play and some 15-30th round pick. If Andy is going to be traded, the Cavs should be able to get either a player who can actually contribute or a valuable top 10 pick. If that cant happen then i want him to stay right here(which might be unfair and selfish but still legitimate.)
You do make a good point there Judy. I was trying to preach this for a while, but I’m just not sure if the Cavs could have gotten equal value for Andy. It’s very hard to convince a team to give up a high 1st round pick for a guy who has A. peaked and B. can’t score. I think he’s close to being worth one, but I’m not sure if teams around the league feel the same way.
If the Cavs are patient enought they can make good deals at the trade deadline for teams who actually need a piece or two to make them”complete” without neccesarily having to give up so much more and getting so much less. I dont want to be on the team that made another team the winner in any trade whatsoever. We’ve lost enough already. And quite honestly i dont think anyone values Andy for what he does than the Cavs and Cavs fans. He can have 9pts and 8rbs but we’ll still screa like crazy if he’s not on the floor in the final minutes of the game. So yea if he’s up to it, If we can and if its in the teams best interests moving forwad i would really love to keep him here and retire him here. Perhaps see hi jersey hanging in the rafters someday. he trully deserves it
