Cavs interested in sign-and-trade for Marvin Williams?

– The Cleveland Cavaliers’ pursuit of Hawks swingman Marvin Williams centers at the moment on trying to convince the Hawks to do a sign-and-trade deal that would send Shaquille O’Neal to Atlanta, according to a league source.The Hawks do have an interest in the 38-year-old O’Neal, who is not likely to return to Cleveland next season. But Atlanta has budget limitations after agreeing to give guard Joe Johnson a $124 million max contract, with ownership unlikely to approve a deal for O’Neal or any other backup center that goes much above the veteran minimum. The Hawks are also interested in free agent center Brad Miller and Bucks free agent center Kurt Thomas.Cleveland got a $14.5 million trade exception by agreeing to a sign-and-trade deal for LeBron James to Miami, in addition to two future draft picks from the Heat. The Cavs could use part of the exception to absorb Williams’s $6.7 million salary for next season.Atlanta also got a trade exception, worth about $2.9 million, when it agreed to a sign-and-trade deal that will send free agent forward Josh Childress to the Phoenix Suns for a future draft pick, and can use that exception to acquire a player making that much money. O’Neal made $20 million last year in the final year of his contract but knows he will have to take a major pay cut next season. He has expressed an interest in playing for the Spurs, though it is not known if San Antonio’s interest, if any, is reciprocal.
So, that’s a thing. Williams is a nice player, but the Cavs should hold off on going for guys like him until they find somebody capable of actually running the offense next season. (Mo Williams and Antawn Jamison: not that somebody.) We’ll see how the Cavs’ search for players that can run an uptempo offense goes.
What happened to the Andre Miller for Mo Williams trade? A trade that would actually make both teams better. Andre Miller could definately run an uptempo offense. I don’t think the Sixers are trading Iguodala with Doug Collins. Anyone else? This team DESPERATELY needs a scoring wing.
The Knicks are apparently showing interest in Shaq..maybe we could work out a SnT for someone? I ahve no idea who, although they’ve been shopping Chandler. Would take a mighty stupid person to do that trade though….so the Knicks sound like the right organization to pull it off.
Kevin H, I’m totally in agreement with using the TPE at the deadline. We can swindle draft picks that way by using it take on someones bloated contract. Either that or a bad team feels like unloading some young (but expensive) talent. I also wouldn’t mind Matt Barnes playing the 2 guard. What I don’t get is the offer to Lowry was huge…we could have made the same offer for Reddick. He has a 3 year offer from the Bulls for 5 million less. Screw picking anyone up. I say play the season as is and let JJ run wild and learn how to be an effective, well-rounded player from a coach who better chew his ass out. Get some young people in, let JJ become a leader and we’ll see where we can go from there.
I guess he is plan B after kyle lowry said no. Not too excited about it. It seems like the cavs are really trying to get a PG. This could be the end of the Mo Williams or Boobie Gibson era’s in cleveland
I’d prefer to just sign Matt Barnes for like 2 years, $5 million total and wait until the trade deadline to use the trade exception.
Yea I’m really not interested in Marvin Williams and his contract either. But I really don’t think there are any better options out there.
Frankly, we should be trading players away, not bringing players in. But that won’t start happening until the deadline.
Marv wouldn’t be a bad pick up, but I’m not sure why we would want him. He’s young and can run the court, but he’s not particularly special in any way. Decent size, decent stats but underwhelming overall. I hope there is a grand plan at work here and that B. Scott is able to keep his job for a few years to transition to this new up-tempo team.
I’d also like to second the Ramon Sessions love.
I guess Marvin Williams fits the Cavaliers’ current straddling-competing-and-rebuilding mode. That’s the only way I can explain it. There have to be better options for young players using the trade exception or through a sign-in-trade.
If a deal getting rid of Jamison came right after this, this would be nice. Might as well take a shot on a young SF, even though his deal is long and he hasn’t lived up to his draft billing.
I would really like to see the Cavs go after PG Ramon Sessions, he could run the fast pace offense Byron wants to run, and he is young and cheap
