WOOOOOO! Have you all stopped celebrating yet? Because I haven’t! Amazingly enough, as you all know, the Cleveland Cavaliers have again landed the #1 pick (2/3 years!) in the NBA draft.
No one really expected the Cavaliers to end up picking first, so with the announcement came a slew of new questions. Essentially…What next?!
Robert, Colin, Nate and I hopped on the line to discuss what having the #1 pick means for this Cavs team. Is Noel going first? Is a major trade coming? Who should be taken with the 19th pick? Who do the Cavs sign this off-season? Are they in win-now mode?
These questions, and many more (most awkward moment of the lottery?) are answered.

He was thought of as the #1 overall pick in this draft from the first day of the regular season in college basketball. His play continued to support that thought, until he got hurt. Listened to the BS Reports with Windhurst and Lowe and they named Pau and Horford as primary targets of the Cavs. These are names we brought up months ago as trade targets. It’s either that we’re on the right wave length months ahead of the best or we just throw enough shit at the wall that some of it actually sticks. The Windhurst proposed 1, 19, 31 and 33 for Pau was hilarious but he might have just let it out too fast before thinking that Grant wouldn’t give that much up for a 34 year-old guy late in the… Read more »
OK, just heard something on air… some NBA scouts/asst GM types… One of them asked “What happens if Cleveland simply passes? Does Orlando have a coronary not needing a C but might feel need to pick BAP?” It was funny – and unlikely as hell – and if ORL had landed #2 (and Cavs #2) they might well pick Trey Burke, leaving CLE with the same decision.
BTW, if Charlotte wants Noel enough to make a deal? [Takes us out of Otto Porter range.. maybe.] What would we need to get back from CHA? (Biyombo??)
Bruce Hooley says we better not take another mediocre player like TT and miss out on the next Norris Cole.

Not a single one of those players would be available straight up for the number one pick this year. You’re talking about trading a completely unproven, injured commodity that isn’t even considered a “can’t-miss prospect” for proven players that have already begun establishing themselves in the league. Some more than others.
All of those GMs would laugh and hang up, not just Demps. Unless you asked for Austin Rivers instead.
Exactly. What from last years draft could you get now? Anthony Davis is a definite no. Dell Demps would either A) laugh his ass off at the offer or B) hang up the phone immediately and say something about Chris Grant’s mother under his breath. Andre Drummond is probably a no as well. At the very least Drummond has already been in their system for a year, makes less money on the pay scale and doesn’t have a torn ACL. I wouldn’t want Harrison Barnes for it. MKG finished with a higher PER than both Barnes and Waiters. So if he is offensively inept, those guys must be downright useless.

I agree with Gordon that Noel is more valuable if everything goes right. I’m totally fine with Noel as a longterm prospect. He’s not going to improve the Cavs much this season. The Cavs will improve this year regardless of what they do in the draft. Rookies rarely have a major impact on a teams win/loss total. I certainly wouldn’t say that Barnes was the reason the Warriors made the playoffs. It’s because of the development of Curry and Thompson and the improved production from Lee, Bogut, Jack and Landry. @Nate. I’m assuming the Bobcats would want McLemore this year and then aim for Wiggins, Parker or Gordon in next years lottery. Gordon is classified as a PF but I see him being more of a SF in the NBA once his jumper develop. Rebuilding teams absolutely should look ahead to the next year. Charlotte doesn’t have delusions of grandeur that they aren’t going to be in the top 5 of the lotto again next year. If McLemore goes 2 they are left with basically Bennet or Len. MKG has established himself as a starting SF in this league. Noel his established himself as…injury prone.
He can’t shoot. Have you ever seen Nerlens Noel shoot? His free throw form is ATROCIOUS.

This makes no sense. Honestly I want no part of MKG. He might develop but his shot just seems too broken.
Charlotte gives us MKG and some change for the #1? I guess it just depends on what “change” is.
I’d certainly consider #1 + #19 for MKG and the #4.
Then we’d fill a hole at SF as well as allowing us to draft a big to fill a hole at the C position.

@Vesus – you’re absolutely insane if you think MKG is worth the #1 overall pick. The guy was historically bad shooting the basketball. Quite possibly the worst of all time. He literally cannot make a basketball outside of 2 feet. Sure, he’s a good defender, but he’s incompetent on offense. He wouldn’t go in the top 5 if he were to be redrafted. Noel is much, much more valauble than he is. Noel has a chance to impact the game much more on defense than MKG can, and is (pathetically) a better scorer than MKG. Also, how can you say… Read more »
Also, I’m completely exaggerating that he should actually be fired. I’m clearly just upset LeBron won another game he should have lost.
@KyrieSwIrving and Nate- I greatly disagree. It’s one thing to take Hibbert out on the bucket LeBron made (another layup, baseline, that absolutely would have been much more contested had Hibbert been in the game) that put the Heat up by 2. The call by Vogel backfired and should have lost them the game had it not been for Wade stupidly fouling George on the three pointer. But to then make the same call AGAIN, up 1 point with 2.2 seconds left – that is the definition of a disastrous call/decision by the head coach. There is no downplaying it,… Read more »
Oh, and I would absolutely trade the top pick for MKG. Starting SF, potentially the best defensive SF in the league, good finisher, can’t shoot but doesn’t need to. No brainer trade.
Some people here are seriously over-estimating the value of this #1 pick. If you hadn’t noticed, nobody wants it and there is a reason why.

Only watched the last 5 minutes of the game (I hate watching the Heat win and they are about to sweep Indiana) and George was shutting Lebron down during the time I watched. Point taken though.
I really don’t want MKG. If I’m going to have a Defense first, Offense 5th player, I want them to be north of 6’9″ and in the post. So are you saying they give us the chance at Wiggins? then yes, I’d take it! Or are you saying that by giving them Noel, who won’t play for 1/2 a season, and taking MKG from them, we are giving them a better chance at Wiggins via another poor year?
Although, with MKG and MGK in Cleveland we could have some fun with the pregame video, I guess

Gordon: Meh. Guys make mistakes. Vogel made a mistake. George made a mistake. They competed, they weren’t intimidated… He coached great for two hours and made one dumb decision (twice). George took at absolutely horrible angle on in-bounds defense. The world will not end.

Great podcast… Not that I think Love is a possibility before the draft (they sent him to the lottery and Kahn is out) but it would probably take Tristan and the #1 pick. It’s not like the Cavs would have the minutes for both Love and Thompson at the 4. If they trade the pick the only realistic possibilities I could see are Boogie or a team who might blow it up for 2014. Can’t imagine they fire Vogel but you can absolutely blame the loss on him. Of course it didn’t help that Paul George wet the bed defending Bron Bron on that last possession. Up to that point he had been shutting #6 down.
At work, didn’t listen to the podcast, didn’t read any of this post. I just wanted to come in here and say that Frank Vogel will be fired within 48 hours of the Pacers’ elimination. Quite possibly the worst coaching decision in playoff history to take Hibbert out of the game TWICE, on the last two defensive possessions, resulting in two layups for LeBron. James had a grand total of THREE shot attempts inside 5 feet during the rest of the game because Hibbert is such a presence inside.
Vogel lost that game for Indiana.
