Lots of links and goodies await. Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.
- The Cavs have discussed trades involving Marreese Speights, but don’t seem interested by the picks being proffered thus far. I’m all for trading Speights if a 16-22 type pick can be had. But as every NBA fan (and Daryl Morey) knows, you can never have enough picks/young players.
- Greg Oden is putting the brakes on a contract until this summer. This slightly reduces the Cavs’ chances of signing him, but the smart money still has Oden playing in Wine and Gold next year.
- Should the Cavaliers sign Donte Greene? They appear to be interested.
- Jeremy Pargo hasĀ found a home in Philadelphia for the rest of the season. Good luck, Jeremy. The memories of the two or three alley-oops you threw down in garbage time will live forever in our hearts, as will those of the 28 points you dropped the night after Kyrie got injured.
UPDATE:
- Also, this Bill Fitch interview should be of interest to the Cavs historian.

If the Heat didn’t sign him this year, it’s more doubtful in my mind that they will next year. All they should have to offer is the vet minimum. Also, the atomic luxury tax is going to turn the Heats roster flexibility into Micky Arison’s second shit ship.
I’m doubting Oden comes here now. His smart move would be the Heat. They need a big man and he would get to play on a championship team. It might be his only shot.
I’m not surprised that no one wants to give anything away for a guy like Speights. He’s a FA at the end of the year so they can just sign him then.
Cols, if I’m looking at a playoff run and need a credible big man off the bench, Speights looks pretty appealing this season. He made a significant impact on day one. No break-in period. There’s gotta be a chance someone will rent him.
I’d deal Speights for a future first in a second. The protections would depend on if the Cavs also brought on a little bit of dead money off the other teams cap line. I doubt they’ll get a meaningful offer for a guy who was available for basically nothing a month ago. I dig that Amico stirs the pot…his sauce and sources never stick though.
I see oden play for a team who has a few bigs, I see an agreement on minutes, and I doubt he wants attention, I don’t see him signing with the heat. He would do great in san Antonio or Memphis. no pressure and if there is a mini set back the team isnt constrained.
They should trade spieghts for a future 1st, and just hoard another pick. Never know what leverage they possess.
Glad to see we’ve all realized Speights is not the anser to us signing — OR DEFEATING — LeBring in 2014
I like Speights but the “I like playing with the kids, the players.” comment I read worries me (It was in the NBA Rumors sections at ESPN). He’s a great fit, but it seems like he wants to play for a contender. If we can get a losely protected future pick or a pick this year, I’d be inclined to do it. Short term it stinks but there are perks. Draft wise, a couple of losses without Speights could keep up from leap frogging New Orleans or Washington, giving us a better shot at the #1 and keeping us in the 4-5 range where there might be a future all star falling to us. Also I like having an extra pick, whether we pair whatever picks we have to move on a guy or stand pat, there’s intriguing role players outside of the lottery. Other than the draft I think it benefits us through cap flexibility (there are a lot of productive big men available this offseason). Also if the Cavs drafted Noel or Alex Len it creates a crowded front court rotation with five guys vying for minutes.
Considering that Speights is a free agent at the end of the season and he’s just an OK player I’m not expecting much. If we get offered any 1st rounder we should take it.
Same with Casspi and Andy.
There’s a nice bit about TT at the end of this latest Zach Lowe post:

Joe,
I saw that comment. I think if the money is equal, he’d like to sign with a contender. That being said, I get the impression that he wouldn’t mind resigning with the Cavs. As far as the price, we’ll have to see how the year plays out. Having an extra pick in a future draft might be nice if, as you say, it’s not heavily protected. Not so sure about this draft.
Personally, unless it’s a great offer, I’d rather keep the bench intact. The pick they would get for him would probably have to be used to replace him. Also, I’d be a little cautious about continuing to gather assets for a “James Harden type” trade (Dani was hinting at this). I’m not really sure a scenario like that is looming. The only one I can think of is the Clippers and having to resign Chris Paul. It might force them to part with DeAndre Jordan. Other than that, what team has a budding superstar or established upper-tier vet that it can’t afford?
Cody,
I really like Speights and his fit with the team. And as far as the Harden future superstar, I distinctly remember a video of Kobe tearing up a pick up game during the lockout offseason, and the sports anchor going “And Kobe is getting guarded by some guy with a beard. Of course he’s going too go off.” The guy with the beard in the video was Harden. I’m not saying another role player will turn into a superstar, but I like Chris Grant’s chances of flipping assets into something better. So if Speights fits as a compliment to Andy, TT, and Zeller and wants to be here, I’m all for keeping him, but if not I think theres a deal that helps the team.
Thanks for that link, Jon. Zach Lowe is great – and it’s a nice sanity check to see that other people had reservations about the TT selection until recently.
