Nothing is imminent yet, It has been done! the Cavs have traded Leuer for Marreese Speights and Josh Selby. Picks may or may not be involved.
Someone talk Kevin down from the ledge.
SECOND UPDATE: As Pete was kind enough to point out, Jones has been sent to the D-League – NIX THAT! Looks like Jones is coming back.
THIRD UPDATE: Looks like Pargo has been waived. Looking at a very different roster after today.
Don’t know if anyone caught the details but it looks like it is a #6-14 from this season thru 2016. Wow
What I understood was that it is #6-14 in 2015 & 2016, then top-5 protected in 2017 & 2018.
I guess the pick isn’t necessarily in 2015.
From ESPN – Brian Windhorst:
“The pick is the most valuable part of the deal for the Cavs because it has protections that would send Cleveland the next pick the Grizzlies have between picks 6-14 this season and 2016, making it a likely lottery selection. It is the sixth first-round pick the Cavs have traded for since 2010.
The Grizzlies owe the Minnesota Timberwolves their next non-lottery first round pick over the next three seasons as part of a previous deal. The Cavs would get the Grizzlies’ next lottery pick, as long as it falls outside the top five, over the same span.”

Now we just have to hope the Grizz are in the lottery between now and 2016.
From NBA.com “The Cavs will receive Memphis’s first round draft pick in the first available year (which is two years after Memphis has satisfied its current pick obligation to Minnesota). Starting in 2015 the pick could be conveyed to the Cavaliers. The pick is protected one-five and 15-30 in 2015 and 2016 (meaning the Cavaliers would acquire a 6-14 pick) and the pick is protected one-five in 2017 and 2018. If the pick has not been conveyed by 2018, it becomes unprotected in 2019. ”

Here’s something interesting, the Grizzlies blog on the trade.

Excellent article Cody
Read it Cody. I guess if they’re mad that’s good for us. Unlike the Casspi trade where Sac fans were cheering.
@ TV63
Was thinking the exact same thing.
Just a note to all those who missed it, Mallory wrote a good piece this morning on the laments of Cleveland fandom. http://www.cavstheblog.com/?p=16719 It got buried by the trade news, but it’s worth a quick read and a longer rumination.
Should be noted that as of now, we aren’t getting the rights to switch one of our first rounders (likely the Heat pick) for the Lakers first round draft pick because it is currently within the first 14 picks. (God it’s good to see them suck this badly, though.)
Kyle, why should that be noted? the pick isn’t getting traded now, and that pick has nothing to do with the current article or any of its comments, and the lakers still have half a season to go.
I’m glad if anyone can explain these picks (now and newer acquired). So many loopholes with… “Well that pick really belongs to T-wolves so you have to wait 2 years and then Cavs get but only if it falls between X and Z and the stars and moon lines up with Saturn and then maybe 3 years after that. You may call me dumb but in reality most people out there don’t understand all the loopholes and addendums.
So the CtB internal discussion is whether we should look to move Speights before the deadline since he has a player option for next year and could opt out. I was thinking Boston, but there’s not a lot of contracts there I’d like to take back. Thoughts?
this griz pick may work out really well….By the time this pick comes to the cavs they could already be a contending team and with the pick it could push them over the hump to top team
I feel bad for Jeremy Pargo. He could be a good player. He has the tools. He just needs to put it all together. losing your job to a backup point guard who can’t shoot is tough.
Nate,
Just a hunch, but I think Dion will end up playing point off the bench. My guess at the second unit:
C – Speights
PF – Jones, now that he’s back
SF – Walton. Scott isn’t giving Casspi playing time.
SG – Ellington
PG – Waiters
great trade, its almost robbery… makes up for the losses that the lakers pick which we will lose now and the kings pick, which i doubt we will ever get cuz of the state of the organization and pending sale.
I continued to be impressed with Grant and co. Why everyone around him media-wise acts like chicken little, he stays the course of being smart and flexible. Kudos to Gilbert too who now looks like the antithesis of what his “rep” is in the media, esp the national media.
Shelby is garbage but Mo and Ellington can actually help this teamnand overall we got a clear talent upgrade and a future pick while remaining very flexible ala the cap and whatnot. What’s not to like?
Dion may be more suited as a 6th man……
Alex..god point on the picks but now that we have so many picks a team like the Kings may be looking to gain some the Cavs should take avantage of this and do their best to get Cousins off the Kings who may be looking to restart since Tyreke Evans may look else to play this summer.
kyle… couldnt agree more, just believe having a anthony parker or a jamison would have been good on this team especially if the cavs try to seek cousins. i think kyrie would be a great influence, along with varajeo but i dont think either have the magnitude of a career to open his eyes. i could see a spurs next year make a trade for him, and obviously the celtics. tho i like thomas robinson, and i dont think itll take much to get him if they do sell the team.
Bryon Scot is a hard a** i think he could open up cousins eyes to show him what he could become if he works hard and stops messing around. Kyire and Dion would both flourish with a big who can shoot and rebound….. kyrie or don drives to the basket if nothing is open pass out to the other for a corner three or dump it off to cousins for a mid-range shoot while tristan inproves his defense and Gee can be a lock down defender then just fill in the pieces after that…Grant needs to do what he can to get cousins and if Any V was still healthy i would be trying for Love but that one most likelwent ot the window once andy went down
This phrase from Kevin made me laugh:
“Leuer potential”
The potential to play the most absurdly terrible post defense in the NBA?
Agree Nate Smith on Pargo. I was sad to see him go. He had some super highlights this year when he started. But the inconsistency bug got him and getting kicked out of rotation didn’t help. I hope someone picks him up and he thrives. Cavs sure did rid players in a short period of time. Harangody, Sloan, Leuer now Pargo.
Pargo has a lot of talent but is probably old enough that that the cavs felt that he will never overcome his urge to play out of control. Livinston is the anti-Pargo whose veteran leadership oozes playing under control. Selby is the new younger version of Pargo, who basically has more potential upside because of that. Ellington adds a really good shooter to the mix who is bigger than Gibson and more under control than CJ. That might mean three guys playing for one or two roster spots for next year. Speights is a perfect addition offering toughness and a decent shot, two things lacking from the current mix. His player option might mean he goes elsewhere, but remember that next year’s FA class is loaded with PFC’s. Not that much CAP room league-wide for him to get a raise elsewhere. The Cavs already have enough first rounders for the near future, so having to wait for it, like the Sacto pick, might be the recipe for staying off the treadmill in NBA Purgatory down the road.
I agree that I’d make a run for Boogie or Love with the extra picks. I don’t see either guy being traded this year, but next season becomes a real possibility for them to be moved. If the Kings do move to Seattle they will get the relocation pardon for sucking. The fans and media will just be happy they have a team again. The 2014 draft should be the best since 2003. There will be a couple teams who blow it up a bit for that draft. Wiggins and Parker should be franchise guys. If I was the new Kings management I’d blow their mish mosh roster for a shot at Wiggins. Landing Wiggins would be like landing Durant or Lebron.
Shelby probably knows Irving and Dion from the AAU circuit when they were all high national HS prospects in the Maryland/NJ area. Perhaps seeing the attention Kyrie gets will motivate him to get shit together. He has talent. Shelby was actually the top HS prospect in the country in 2010 ahead of Kyrie and Barnes.
kyle: scott would get under his skin and make him flourish as a player, but once it hits the fan, we all know who goes first, the coach. and to be honest i rather keep scott over cousins. i like him alot.
KyrieSwIrving, not sure why I’m getting attacked about that, but if you reread the comments you will clearly see comments regarding this years draft picks, in which the Lakers pick would be relevant. Thanks.
