What does Byron Scott have to prove? Kevin and I discuss in this 18th installment of Cavs: The Podcast.

Commenters: What sorts of changes, results, benchmarks do you think the Cavs should demand of their coach?
Simply put, Scott has to start to establish an offensive and defensive identity for this team.
Are we a team that plays transition basketball, or do we play a plodding half court-set?
Do we press and try to create turnovers or do we pack the paint and dare the opponent to beat us from outside?
Do we play a Princeton-inspired offense or whatever?
We can only for so long use the excuse that we are young and lack talent. The same is true for New Orleans, Orlando, and Charlotte. A good team with mediocre individual talent can give five talented guys a hard time. But for that, Scott has to start and build a team, and establish systems and routines.
Perhaps he’s trying, but something is clearly amiss. Last year he sort of blamed some players of not understanding the plays, but I’m starting to wonder about his teaching skills. Although it may be perhaps too soon to tell, the development of TT this season has been disappointing, Gee has regressed, and Waiters is a work in progress. His rotations and tough love approach regarding bench players has not helped for guys like Casspi, Pargo, Samuels and Leuer, nor has the lack of consistency in the style of play. Perhaps these guys are just not NBA caliber, but it seems clear at least that Scott isn’t creating an atmosphere were many players overachieve.
When a class achieves lousy results in exams, do you bemoan the quality of the students, or do you look at the teacher?
If not a new coach, Chris should hire mike brown as defensive consultant.
I’m a Mike Brown fan. I’d love to see him back with the organization. But I don’t think he wants any job other than HC, and I don’t think the org would basically admit they were wrong 3 years ago when they let him go and switched directions.
@Dave – yeah well said. There is no identity and you are right – he hasn’t done much for Pargo/Casspi/Leuer/Samuels. I’m not saying they deserve a lot of minutes but the way he banishes them to the bench for DNPs is not helping their confidence.
Hey Dave, those 3 straight double-doubles by TT have been disappointing. So has the fact that he is essentially giving us the same rebounding numbers as Andy since Andy has been hurt. Oh, and Andy is the leading rebounder in the league. So disappointing…
