It appears to be well known by now that the Cavs are gauging Anderson Varejao’s trade value around the league, and that he has great value. It seemsĀ likeĀ this has gone to another level, and that the Timberwolves are seriously interested. How much can Grant get them to offer? Nikola Pekovic, a pick and Derrick Williams would be a hell of a package. Maybe we could add Boobie and grab Luke Ridnour as a backup PG, also. The may seem unlikely, but remember- this is David Khan we’re talking about. I know I’m in the minority on this, but I’m crossing my fingers for a deal to get done.

I’d take Pekovic, Williams, and a pick. I love Andy, but that fills our most serious need (SF) and gives us a legit center to replace wild thing. I’d be sad to lose Andy, but it’s a spectacular haul.
Anything less, though, is a no go.
Can we please stop posting something new about trading Andy every 2 days until it is more substantial than “rumor has it Cavs gauging interest, team X has some interest” Seriously, he’s on our team, He’s our best player, there is no reason to be desperately grabbing at straws at every whiff you think you smell to try and ditch him for some random unknown package.
We get it, you think a half year flier on an average Center, a position-less guy quickly looking like a huge bust at #2 overall, and a non-lottery pick are a steal for our best, most underpaid player under contract for multiple years who will be better in 4 years than any of those assets. We are glad you aren’t running our team. Unfortunately you are part of running this blog, and can’t do anything more than stir up the same useless rumor mill without any substance to add.
Really Mallory, Derrick williams, whose stats are pretty bad and who occasionally gets DNP-CD next to his name as a #2 pick and also usually plays PF is our answer at SF? And Pekovic’s half-of-verajoa’s rebounding rate is our legit center? Also, with Andy, Love, and rubio coming back an already 10-9 minnesota is not going to give us a lottery pick, and the upcoming draft isn’t particularly great.
Oh, and Pekovic is a completely unrestricted free agent this summer… WHY THE HELL WOULD WE DO THIS!? I can see Derrick Willaims driving this deal enough to engage you guys, but you forget its not 2011, and if Minnesota, you know, the team that knows him best, is ready to give up on him, how could we possibly help ourselves, right?
Not sure if that is the most reliable source, although I think the gentleman from ESPN1500 believes it to be reliable. I’m also not sure how much I like Dani’s proposed deal. That being said, we’re all Cavs fans, and despite our different perspectives there is no need to insult one another.
Mr SwIrving: I didn’t write this rumor. Obviously, arguing about trading Andy has been a significant part of the blogs coverage. However, the possibility of a trade hasn’t actually been confirmed by an espn rumor for some time- until today. That was why I felt it may be important to post. Apparently, I was wrong, and should have found a Cavs news articles that was MUCH more interesting and relevant on a non game day, when there wasn’t a game last night. Next time I’ll ask your opinion!! Sorry :)
Mallory, it would be an amazing deal. Mike, you are a good man.
Thanks Dani, I just feel that with Pekovic heading into restrictive free agency, the Cavs may have to overpay him ($9-12 million per year?), and he would wind up making much more than Andy will the next three years despite being just three years younger and not the same level of player. I like Pek, but I don’t think he should eat a huge amount of cap room when he probably can’t be a top three player on a real contender.
The question on Derrick Williams is not whether he’s an NBA player (he is). It’s whether he functions better as a power forward or small forward considering he has trouble guarding either position.
Love Andy’s effort, but c’mon we are rebuilding here and by the time we are in contention again Andy will be 32-33 years old. If we could pick up Williams and Pekovic, plus maybe a pick added in, we’d be foolish not to go for this deal if it were available.
Add those 2 guys with Zeller, TT, Waiters, Irving, Gee and this year’s coming pick and we have some strength and depth. Plus they will have Walton’s expiring deal to move and maybe even trade Boobie. Heck we could add a ton with these 2-3 moves if someone wants to move for expiring deals.
Season is already over obviously, so what about this, I was kicking some trades around on the Trade Machine…
Cavs sent Andy, Boobie & Casspi to the 76ers for E.T, J. Rich, A Moultrie and a pick
This will put Zeller at the 5. T.T at 4. E.T 3. J. Rich 2, Kyrie 1. Waiters the 6th man to play the 1/2, Gee can pla the 2-3 along with CJ. Moultrie can spell TT and Zeller.
We’re sure to be a top 3 pick and select a big at that point, plus the option of of the Lakers pick if it isnt lottery or Miamis along with the pick we get from the 76ers.
Thoughts instead of insults?
I like this better than the T-wolves trade. Not high on williams, and Pekovic only has 1 year left, unless he’s restricted.
Forgot to add that E.T would be a RFA in 2 years and can also play the 1-2 positions, then Moultrie would be had for awhile.
The lineup options could be endless for going big or small.
Honestly i would do this deal mostly for the pick and to have derick williams coming off the bench when we are contenders again, but neither one of those players are very good, obviously williams is young, but he isnt a 3 no matter what everyone wants him to be, if the pick is unprotected and this year i’d take it just for the athleticism and potential of williams, but as of now the pick is the best part.
Everyone knows the only trade that makes sense is Andy for Perkins Perry Jones 3 and the raptors pick.
If Minnesota gets Andy, they will get all the rebounds, even from games they’re not playing.
J Hill – From the Thunder, give me PJ3, Raptors pick AND Jeremy Lamb. We would be handing them a ring this year (Varejao taking Perkins’ minutes would be HUGE for the Thunder), so we could get a couple legit prospects and that pick. Wouldn’t hurt them in the short term, and the way things are going OKC will resign KMart unless he asks for too much.
I don’t like Derrick Williams. He is NOT a 3. I don’t think the 3 is a crazy need either, Gee and Miles could hold it down if we got someone to share minutes with Waiters. Also, there are a lot of good SF prospects in the upcoming draft. So I propose…
Andy for Pekovic+Shved, straight up. Shved solves our backup PG issues, gives us another playmaker, and a potentially very explosive NBA player. Pekovic and Zeller would be a nasty big man lineup, and I have given up hope on Tristan Thompson after watching him go 1-10 from the field at the Q against LAL (in a win, but still, dude can’t shoot). I’ve been hyping Shved since before the Olympics, and he is really matching it. Shooting percentages are down from Euroleague, but he is also adjusting to NBA play, and he can really pass the ball. Honestly, I’d rather have him play the 3 for us than Derrick Williams. Williams is big and strong for that position, but he’s slow. Shved is smaller but quick, with handles. His positional flexibility, which is actualized compared to Williams’ positionless purgatory, would be great and he could instantly stop the Cavs from bleeding points when Kyrie sits. Williams would be nice, if the idea is to sit TT for the guy drafted two spots ahead of him. But Pekovic and Williams on the floor at the same time has not worked for Minnesota. Do not want.
Then, with all of our cap flexibility, and our own draft pick which should be solid, we can go after a top SF or PF (Josh Smith!). Too bad TT is garbage and we can’t get a pick for him, a lineup of Irving/Shved-Waiters/Shved/Miles-Miles-Gee/Draft Pick/FA-FA/Leur/Zeller-Pekovic/Zeller would be more than a little bit exciting. Oh well, I guess we would need rebounds and TT can do that.
And the “I’d never trade Andy…not even to Chicago for the Bobcats 2016 unprotected first rounder and a 2 gallon bucket of Garrett’s popcorn” sides are swayed! Pekovic, Williams, and a 2016 unprotected first round pick (year after Love bolts). That would be a PHENOMENAL haul. I’d do it in a second….Can you imagine how dominant Minny would be on the boards until Andy gets hurt?
@ray I don’t think anyone would mind us giving the OKC thunder a ring, keeps Lakers, Boston and the Heat from winning it which I’m ok with, plus it wouldn’t hurt to have the good graces of a team like the Thunder to trade with in the future. Plus with all the value people put on picks I’m not trading him away for anyone without a pick or two coming our way for use in sign and trades. Every year people talk about how picks don’t a guarantee at the start of the season then all of a sudden two or three weeks before the draft they start overvaluing anything higher than the 20 pick.
Who are you people who think TT is “garbage”? Do you even watch basketball?
What so we can get another Casspi. Problem with Cavs is coach doesn’t play to win. He’s on such an ego trip punishing the bottom 3 all the time. Bucks game was close and he put slower than Moses Sloan with 4 points if that. I’m sick of his head games. Yeah you’re pissed at Pargo but clearly he is the better backup point guard. So gald you made your point to punish and Cavs lose again. Stop shopping Varejao and shop for another coach. God we couldn’t do any worse!
@Nathan I’m in the camp of tt will be an average NBA player. However I absolutely detest players who can’t make their freethrows. It’s the second easiest shot in the game. I think people should be less concerned about what we can get for Andy and more on who we can scrounge up to take Thompson off our hands. I like him, I met at a chipotle this summer and he’s about the nicest person you’ll ever meet, I really want him to be good. I think he can fix some of the issues with his game like getting blocked every other shot, but free throws rarely change very much and I think he’ll be on our bench on two years.
I agree Nathan. It’s way too early to cast TT aside. Bigs develop slower. Kyrie being so pro-ready just makes it look worse. The last thing you want to do is give up on a guy too soon. To me TT thinks too much on offense. You’ll actually see a decent offensive move out of him here and there and he doesn’t finish. He’s shown glimpses. I’m not against adding Williams. If that actually is the Andy trade. Williams is in a terrible situation. Patience is one of the most important aspects of team building. The Warriors have had three intriguing cores of kids in the last 20 years and freaked out and blew it up each time. That’s why the Warriors are the Warriors. The silver lining of this season for me has been Gilbert and Grants patience to building for a few years.

J Hill knows what’s up.
Taking his proposition and combining it with Ray’s starts the negotiation off like this:
- ASKING OKC for PJ3, Lamb, Raptors Pick + Cap Filler for Varejao right now and being patient over the next month
- Secretly being WILLING TO ACCEPT a minimum of PJ3, Raptors Pick + Perkins for Varejao
- Hoping an actually deal falls somewhere between the 2
And yes, I know Perkins is significantly less productive than Varejao but the value lies in a risky PJ3 and a likely top 5 pick. You have to give up something to get something. It’s extremely rare for a legitimate championship contender like OKC to have a need at C AND an upcoming lottery pick…let alone one that has a good chance of being a high lottery pick. A little something I like to call
THE PERFECT STORM
Hi! This is my first comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and say I really enjoy reading your posts. Can you recommend any other blogs/websites/forums that cover the same topics? Many thanks!
I like the OKC deal better. PJ3/Raptors pick/Perkins is a fair trade. You get an intriguing player in PJ3 and a premium draft pick. Toronto is a mess. The GM and coach could get fired at any moment, and the roster lacks payroll flexibility. The pick is lightly protected and could be a major trade asset down the road (Love?) or yield a pick in a better draft than 2013. It’s top 2 protected for the Wiggins/Parker bonanza.
Everything I’ve read thus far is that the Thunder aren’t interested and/or don’t want to shake things up chemistry-wise. Still two months until the draft and things can change fast.
Twitter Account Creator- I’m going to go out on a limb and say we’re the best out there, but fearthesword.com and hoopsworld.com both have some good stuff.
