Programming Announcement: I have been signed by NBC
2010-02-08As you may know, NBC is starting up a new sports website. It’s called Pro Basketball Talk, and the goal is to provide a one-stop destination for NBA fans on the internet, much like Pro Football Talk for NFL fans. What you probably don’t know is that I’ve been tapped to write for them. Kurt Helin, formerly the head of Forum Blue and Gold, is heading up the project, and will be editing the site. The other team members are slated to be Rob Mahoney of The Two Man Game, Matt Moore of Hardwood Paroxysm, and Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel. It’s a great team, and the site should be wonderful, so I strongly encourage you guys to stop by.
I’ll be doing short-form, general NBA posting, and I’ll be banging out posts from 5:30-8:30 PM EST on Mondays and Fridays and 1:00-5:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Obviously, I’m tremendously excited about this opportunity and thankful to Kurt for giving me a chance. Since I started my first blog two and a half years ago, I’ve never ceased to be amazed at the things I’ve been able to do, readers I’ve been able to share my point of view with, the people I’ve met, and the opportunities I’ve had. It’s an amazing time to be a writer and a sports fan if you work hard and are passionate about what you do. This is probably the biggest one yet, so I’ll do my best and hope to do well for Kurt and NBC.
As for the effect this will have on Cavs: The Blog, everything should be pretty much business as usual. As you can see, I’ll be working for PBT in the afternoons, and the recaps and substantial posts for this site generally get written in the evenings. What might change right now are the Links To The Present posts, which generally get done during the period that I’ll now be working for NBC. I’ll try to find a way to make it work, but I might look into alternate solutions if it’s too much.
Finally, I just want to thank you guys. This community has really grown this season, and one of the best parts of my day is waking up in the morning and hearing what you guys think. I try to get better every day, and you guys have helped me do that. As always, thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Be well, and be sure to check out Pro Basketball Talk. Until later.
Just remember $30M to buy out Conan. I’m sure you can get at least half that.
Congrats on the NBC deal– I’ll definitely have to check that out. It’s always nice to read your points of view on this blog; very original and creative writing. Hope it goes well for you with your new endeavor.
With great power comes great responsibility.
Congrats man… best of luck to you.
Amazing!!!! Congrats John!!!
Awesome! Keep up the good work!
THe problem here is NBC doesn’t show any basketball therefore who is going to go to their website to read about basketball? Either way, good luck.
YEA!! Congrats!!
Congrats John! Best of luck to you. Will you still be frequenting the Daily Dime Live?
Amazing! Good Luck!
John, you’re just the man. Congratulations, buddy.
Congrats John. When I read Kurt was leaving Truehoop for PBT I had a feeling the you were about to be tapped to help him out. I wish you nothing but luck, and maybe this will force you to find some more help for the best Cavs blog on the ‘net.
Sweet! Congrats.
Congrats on the success!
Congrats! U deserve it (way more than Coby Karl deserved to start an NBA game which he did the other night)
Mazel Tov! Do keep writing for us. We’re really glad to have you!
Congratulations, you really deserve the break. Reading your posts has become a daily ritual for me, just a great mix of objective observation and personal insight.
I will admit, I was bummed when I read this. I have finally found a writer that is worth reading (P Dealer is OK) and now NBC comes calling. I will follow you and I prey you continue to write about the Cavs (next season?). It’s great to have a young talented guy write about your home team. I feel the Cavs have the best team, and the best writers (between you and Windy) of the entire league. I see great things in your future. You have made a fan, and I am one critical SOB.
Honest reportage is the most important role for your site, thanks. This site has been way out in front of the main ESPN writers and reporters as well as the national broadcasters in understanding the Cav juggernaut. Listening to yesterday’s national game, JVG has finally figured it out. So now is the most dangerous time of the year for fans and for the Cavs’ players and management. Success breeds complacency and so we must remove all the rosy glasses and take the hardest look possible at the team’s chances. As we’ve seen, May will be too late. And management must… Read more »
Awesome news! But I’m wondering the same thing DJ is about ESPN…
So does this mean that you will still be able to write for an ESPN-related site such as this here blog, or will NBC require you to leave this behind (like Kurt did at FB&G)?
Rock on dude…keep up the great work!
Bigtime! That’s nice. Keep sticking up for our Cavs!
Congrats John! Good work! Love the blog.
Congrats John! Hope it works out well for you there.
